One of the key signings is veteran tight end Ross Dwelley, who officially joined the Lions’ active roster after making his debut in the win against Baltimore. Dwelley had previously been on the Lions’ practice squad, brought in after tight end Shane Zylstra was placed on injured reserve due to an ankle injury. His elevation to the main roster reflects the team’s need for reliable depth behind starters Sam LaPorta and Brock Wright.
Dwelley’s NFL Journey Before Joining Detroit
Ross Dwelley brings a wealth of experience to the Lions’ tight end room. Before arriving in Detroit, he spent six seasons with the San Francisco 49ers, where he developed a reputation as a dependable backup and special teams contributor. He then played the 2024 season with the Atlanta Falcons, further adding to his resume.
Over his eight-year NFL career, Dwelley has recorded 45 receptions for 523 yards and five touchdowns. While those numbers may not jump off the page, his versatility and football IQ make him a valuable asset, especially in a system that relies heavily on tight ends for both blocking and receiving duties.
In his first appearance for the Lions against the Ravens, Dwelley logged four snaps on offense and 12 on special teams. Though he’s not expected to see significant playing time in the passing game, his role on special teams could prove vital as the season progresses. With injuries and rotation always a factor, having a veteran like Dwelley ready to step in adds a layer of security for Detroit’s coaching staff.
Lions Add Quinton Jefferson to Defensive Line Depth
In addition to Dwelley, the Lions also signed veteran defensive lineman Quinton Jefferson to their practice squad. Jefferson joined the team following an impressive tryout on Tuesday, and his addition brings experience and versatility to a defensive front that has shown flashes of dominance but still needs depth.
Jefferson was originally drafted by the Seattle Seahawks in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft out of Maryland. Since then, he has played for five other NFL teams over his nine-year career, including the Buffalo Bills, Las Vegas Raiders, New York Jets, and most recently, the Cleveland Browns. His career stats include 206 total tackles, 28.5 sacks, and four forced fumbles — solid production for a rotational lineman.
Given his experience and proven ability to contribute across multiple defensive schemes, Jefferson could be a candidate to move from the practice squad to the active roster, especially if injuries arise or if the Lions look to rotate fresh legs into their defensive line. His familiarity with AFC North opponents like the Browns may also offer strategic insight heading into Sunday’s game.
